Cats
are overtaking dogs as the No. 1 pet in the United States, but attendance
and entries at cat shows are declining.
"We've had a decline (in entries) in the past few years because of the economy," said Alexis Mitchell, president of the Topeka Cat Club and manager of the Topeka Cat Fanciers' Show, held Saturday and Sunday in Ramada Inn Downtown. About 124 household and pedigree cats from at least eight Midwest states --- Nebraska, Texas, Illinois, Iowa, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma --- were entered in the show. The breeds ranged from 20-pound Maine Coons to nearly hairless Sphynxes. Kimbry, a 4-month-old Norwegian forest cat, is teased with a glittery tassle by her owner, Lisa Vasa, of Castle Rock, Colo., during the Topeka Cat Fanciers' Show at the Ramada Inn Downtown in Topeka. Hazel Lindstrand, a judge from Oak Park, Ill., examines Vajsco, a 1-year-old Norwegian forest cat, during Sunday afternoon's competition. |
